As a mind-body-spirit practitioner and kinesiologist, I've experienced first-hand how trauma can leave lasting imprints on the body. These imprints may not always be obvious, yet they profoundly shape our mental, emotional, and physical health. Trauma does not discriminate. It is experienced worldwide from the most dependent stage of human development to the most aware and independent, and on to the frailty of the golden years. It isn't just about a memory; it is an experience that can continue to affect us, sometimes without our realising it. The good news is, that there are ways to uncover and address these imprints gently, and I am here to offer guidance as you navigate your healing journey.
What is Trauma and How Does It Affect Us?
Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event. It overwhelms our ability to cope and leaves an imprint on our nervous system, our emotions, and the physical structure of our body. These imprints are often stored in the body and can present themselves in a variety of ways:
Mentally: You might experience recurring thoughts, difficulty focusing, or a constant sense of anxiety or fear that seems to linger.
Emotionally: Some people feel disconnected or numb, while others struggle with intense emotions like anger, sadness, or guilt that seem to come out of nowhere.
Physically: Trauma can also manifest as chronic pain, muscle tension, digestive issues, fatigue, or even disease. These physical symptoms often arise when unresolved emotions get trapped in specific body areas.
The Body and Trauma: A Deep Connection
One of the reasons trauma can have such a lasting impact is because the body holds onto it. The body is incredibly intuitive - it remembers experiences on a cellular level, even when the mind has moved on. Trauma can be stored as energy in different parts of the body, which is why people sometimes experience physical symptoms that don't have a clear medical explanation.
For example, some may notice tension in their shoulders, a tight stomach, or a heaviness in their chest. These can be areas where trauma is being held, whether consciously or unconsciously. In kinesiology, we understand that this stored energy needs to be addressed to restore balance to the body.
How Kinesiology Can Guide Your Healing Journey
Kinesiology is a holistic, non-invasive approach that uses muscle testing to communicate with the body and access its inherent wisdom. Through this process, we can identify areas where trauma is being held and explore the emotions or experiences tied to it.
The session unfolds gently, utilising muscle testing to engage your body in a dialogue. This allows us to ask targeted questions to identify when the trauma occurred and where it is held in your body. By tapping into these deeper layers of your experience, we can facilitate healing without the need to delve into the intricate details of the trauma itself. This approach makes it more user-friendly and encourages a more profound understanding of your journey.
Once we’ve identified the source of the trauma, we can use techniques such as acupressure and meridian work to help balance the energy in the body. These methods are designed to gently release the blocked energy that’s tied to trauma.
Here are some common techniques that may come up during a session:
Governing Vessel Stimulation: The governing vessel runs along the centre of the spine, up the neck, over the top of the head and down towards the mouth, where it goes inside the body and back to the kidneys. It’s a key energy channel for releasing blocked energy. Stimulating points along this vessel can help the body begin to restore balance.
Meridian Points:Â We may also work with specific meridian points, such as:
Liver Meridian (related to anger)
Lung Meridian (linked to grief)
Stomach Meridian (associated with worry)
These techniques can help your body release energy that’s been trapped for a long time, bringing you back into a state of balance.
How Healing is a Journey
Healing is not something that happens overnight, and it is not always linear. There may be layers to uncover and release, and everyone's experience is different. My role is to offer you the guidance and tools to help your body find its own way towards balance.
After working together, I may also offer you simple exercises to practice at home. These could include somatic techniques like grounding, body scanning, or self-acupressure to help maintain the progress we've made.
The Role of Self-Awareness and Compassion
The process of healing trauma requires patience and self-compassion. It’s about acknowledging what you’ve experienced and giving yourself the time and space to process it. Through kinesiology, we work together to uncover where trauma is stored and help the body release it at its own pace.
It is important to note that healing can only occur when the healer within you feels it is the right time to resolve and heal unprocessed memories from the cellular level.
One of the most important steps in this process is learning to be gentle with yourself. Trauma takes many forms, and it’s often layered. Healing is a journey, not a destination, and it requires a compassionate approach - both toward yourself and toward the experiences that have shaped you.
You Are Not Alone in This Journey
If you’ve been struggling with trauma and are ready to explore how kinesiology can guide your healing journey, I’m here to offer support. Together, we can explore how trauma is affecting your body and gently work to bring balance. Healing is possible, and it’s a path you don’t have to walk alone.
Reach out if you’re ready to take the next step in your healing journey. I offer individual sessions, group workshops where I teach you the techniques I use in the clinic, and CPD courses for therapists looking to support their clients.
